An experimental study of turbulent relative dispersion models
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report measurements of the spreading rate of pairs of tracer particles in an intensely turbulent laboratory water flow. We compare our measurements of this turbulent relative dispersion with the longstanding work of Richardson and Batchelor, and find excellent agreement with Batchelor’s predictions. The distance neighbour function, the probability density function of the relative dispersion, is measured and compared with existing models. We also investigate the recently proposed exit time analysis of relative dispersion. 4 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. On the Well-Mixed Quasi-One-Dimensional Formulation of Lagrangian Stochastic Models for Turbulent Relative Dispersion
The derivation of Quasi-One-Dimensional Model for turbulent relative dispersion (Kurbanmuradov, Monte Carlo Methods and its applications, 3(1), 37-52, 1997) is reviewed and an error is detected. An estimation of the difference between the correct and the incorrect formulations is given in a very simplified turbulence. The correct formulation proves to behave more in agreement with results obtai...
متن کاملTurbulent dispersion in the ocean
The mathematical framework for turbulent transport in the ocean is reasonably well established. It may be applied to large-scale fields of scalars in the ocean and to the instantaneous or continuous discharge from a point. The theory and its physical basis can also provide an interpretation of passive scalar spectra. Spatial variations in the rate of turbulent transfer can be related to the mov...
متن کاملExperimental study and numerical simulation of three dimensional two phase impinging jet flow using anisotropic turbulence model
Hydrodynamic of a turbulent impinging jet on a flat plate has been studied experimentally and numerically. Experiments were conducted for the Reynolds number range of 72000 to 102000 and a fixed jet-to-plate dimensionless distance of H/d=3.5. Based on the experimental setup, a multi-phase numerical model was simulated to predict flow properties of impinging jets using two turbulent models. Mesh...
متن کاملLagrangian stochastic models for turbulent relative dispersion based on particle pair rotation
The physical picture of a fluid particle pair as a couple of material points rotating around their centre of mass is proposed to model turbulent relative dispersion in the inertial range. This scheme is used to constrain the non-uniqueness problem associated to the Lagrangian models in the well-mixed class and the properties of the stochastic process derived are analysed with respect to some tu...
متن کاملNumerical simulation of scalar dispersion downstream of a square obstacle
The analysis of scalar dispersion in turbulent flows is relevant for a broad range of applications, including investigation of hazardous releases, bio-terrorism and control of air quality. In the last 50 years, experimental and numerical investigations of canonical flows, such as turbulent boundary layers (Fackrell & Robins 1982) or grid-generated turbulence (Livescu et al. 2000), have enhanced...
